The Georgia Hospice and Palliative Care Organization
Proudly Presents
The 2012 Annual Leadership and Clinical Conference
“Follow the Yellow-Brick Road:
The Path to Hospice and
Palliative Care in the 21st Century”
Each year, GHPCO strives to create an annual educational conference focused on leadership and clinical topics from a variety of local, regional and national experts in many different fields. This year’s theme, “Follow the Yellow-Brick Road: The Path to Hospice and Palliative Care in the 21st Century” brings us forward together through the doorway from what WAS to what IS. It provides an opportunity for hospice and palliative care leaders and professionals to discover the path that leads to the best patient outcomes. Hospice and palliative care are companion services in the health care industry and we must work together to achieve the highest quality of care and service delivery for all patients who seek our shelter. As Dorothy and her friends once learned, all you need are brains, heart, courage and the desire to find your way “home.”
Looking Forward: Where Hospice and Palliative Care are GoingJudi Lund Person, MPH ,National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization
Location: Masters Hall
Following the yellow-brick road led Dorothy and her friends to both danger and triumph but ultimately, it led her home. Should we stick to the path or forge a new direction? What does the future hold for hospice and palliative care in this era of scrutiny, reform and debate about health care? How can hospices survive in the landscape of reduced reimbursement, increased monitoring, public reporting requirements and
regulatory changes that come faster than a tornado? Where will
palliative care be considered in the conversation about improving
quality outcomes, patient-centered care and the need for increased home
care and case management? NHPCO’s Vice President of Regulatory and
Compliance Affairs shares her considerable knowledge and insight from
her perspective as a collaborator with CMS, MedPAC, the OIG, the NQF
and other agencies currently studying how hospice and palliative care
will fit in the future of health care in the United
States.
Judi graduated with honors with a BA in Sociology with a social work concentration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Masters degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining NHPCO, she was Executive Director of the Carolinas Center for Hospice and End of Life Care (formerly Hospice for the Carolinas), and served on the NHPCO Board of Directors for six years. She has both chaired and served on numerous national committees, including the Medicare Hospice Benefit task force and the NHPCO Data committee. A winner of the prestigious "Peter Keese Award" for the advancement of hospice care in North Carolina, she also led Hospice for the Carolinas to four national awards, including the 1993 NHO President’s Award for Excellence in Educational Programming.
The Life and Legacy of Dr. Elisabeth Kubler Ross: Psychiatrist, Humanitarian and Hospice Pioneer
Ken Ross, Elisabeth Kubler Ross Foundation
Opening Plenary Friday Feb 24, 2012
9:30 AM – 10:30 AM
Location: Masters Hall
Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, with her ground-breaking publication, On Death and Dying, began a discourse on the subject of patient-centered care before the concept had ever been developed. Her landmark work with terminally ill and dying persons provided much-needed insight into the spiritual, emotional and human needs of those cared for by a distinctly clinical and often impersonal system of medicine. But what was she like personally? Ken Ross, the only son of Dr. Kubler-Ross, takes us on a fascinating journey into
the life and legacy of this larger-than-life personality. He will share
personal stories, images and anecdotes about growing up with Elisabeth
and will discuss the impact of her work on his life today. Certainly,
this is a session you do not want to miss!Ken Ross is the only son of Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, pioneering generator of new perspectives on end of life care including bereavement, grief and dying and was a prodigious author of over 22 books in 34 languages on the subjects.
Ken is the president of the Elisabeth Kubler-Ross Foundation, a non-profit motivated to preserve the legacy of compassionate support of those facing death, loss and bereavement. The EKR Foundation is internationally supported and Ken works with agencies in different countries to promote the principles of compassion, communications, and spirituality as integral to end of life care and bereavement.
Ken, like his mother, is an author and has published 2 books about his mother’s life - Real Taste of Life: A Journal by Ken Ross and Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, 2002 and Tea with Elisabeth by Ken Ross, Fern Stewart Welch, and Rose Winters, 2009. Currently, Ken pursues professional photography as his life’s work, traveling around the world to capture images of beauty and power and he is a frequent public speaker on topics including the life of his mother and the art of photography as it applies to end of life care and bereavement support.
