August 26-27, 2010 – “Spiritual Care at the End of Life:  Implementation, Integration and Inspiration”
Embassy Suites, Brunswick, GA

GHPCO presents a Summer Workshop for Hospice and Palliative Care Professionals to address the growing need for spiritual care programs that work within the framework of end of life care regulations while meeting the professional needs of those providing care to the patients and families moving through the dying process.

Implementation:  Thursday August 26, 9am to 12pm

Presented by Jennifer Kennedy from NHPCO, this session will review the regulatory rules behind the development of spiritual care as an integral part of the holistic philosophy of hospice and palliative medicine.  She will address such issues as documentation, planning care, working with the interdisciplinary team and delivery of care in a compliance-driven environment.  Bring a friend for this one!

Jennifer L. Kennedy, MA, BSN, RN, CLNC

Jennifer is the Regulatory Assistance Specialist for the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization.  Jennifer has over 22 years of diverse experience as a leader and nurse in healthcare settings in numerous areas of the United States including Hawaii.  The majority of her health care career has been spent in realms of hospice, community health, and home health care settings.

She has served at the Director level for several prominent national and regional healthcare organizations in organization operations, clinical care, education, quality, and compliance.   She has a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from DeSales University, and a dual Master’s of Arts degree in Health Promotion Counseling and Case Management.  She is also a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant (CLNC).   Jennifer has presented at educational conferences on the national and state level, has written articles for hospice and home health industry journals, and has developed online education modules and products for NHPCO.

Integration:  Thursday August 26, 1pm to 4pm

Presented by Kevin Quiles, author and hospice chaplain, this session will address the practical side of working as a spiritual care provider including development of a truly integrated spiritual care program that supports patients, families, colleagues and the professional.  Kevin spoke at GHPCO’s annual conference and was warmly received there by all attendees.

Kevin Quiles, M. Div.

Combining twelve years of experience in end-of-life care with a decade of academic, Kevin Quiles, M.Div. serves as educator for both lay and professional caregivers wrestling with the unrelenting challenges facing a steadily expanding aging population.  Author of six articles relevant to professionals—documentation, interdisciplinary team development, and religious and cultural sensitivity—the spiritual and bereavement counselor has added to his compilations his new book, Spiritual Care to Elderly and Dying Loved Ones, a 260-page volume filled with practical wisdom for novices and seasoned caregivers alike. Along with these most useful accomplishments, Quiles has shared a wealth of valuable information to audiences composed of physicians, nurses, chaplains, social workers, counselors, and families.

Inspiration: Friday August 27, 9am to 12pm

Prepare to be inspired!  Joyce, or “Joy” as she prefers, is ready to bring you back to the reason you came to end of life care and to put a little more “JOY” in your day!   You might learn a lot or feel a little more serene when she’s finished – we just hope you’ll be “Inspired” to go back to your office and “Implement” an “Integrated” spiritual care program!

Joyce Marie Sheldon is the author of From Fear to Faith, A Caregiver’s Journey, which was endorsed by Hospice International, as well as Seekers and Dreamers … a collection and two bereavement books, Mia and Little Red Feather and Little Kind Heart.  She is a devoted Caregiver Advocate, having taken her hands-on experience as a caregiver to form the foundation of presentations to hospice staff, volunteers and family caregivers.  Her insight into the heart and mind of the caregiver, both professional and family, is related with compassion and understanding.  She founded a caregiver’s support group, created Bridges to Understanding, A Caregiver's Conference and also A Hospice Retreat.  The mother of 7 grown children, Joy spends her time writing, traveling and sharing time with those she loves.
